EPISD Safe Routes to School
Forty-seven elementary campuses have been participating in the two-year Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program. The grant period is from October 15, 2010 to October 15, 2012.
The two-year grant for each of the campuses was awarded $100,000.00. It includes a public awareness campaign, walking and bicycling safety education activities for children, scheduled walking and bicycling activities such as the Walking School Bus, and increased security measures at the campus to ensure the safety of students coming to and from school.
SRTS is designed to make bicycling and walking to school a safe transportation option using projects and activities that promote and change students' health and physical behaviors through:
* education in bicycling and pedestrian safety awareness, and
* by awarding bicycles and helmets to encourage physical transportation options
National Center for Safe Routes to School
Goals of the Program:
Increase the number of children who walk and bike to school.
Follow the safest routes to walk and bike to school, and suggest safety improvements to those routes.
Develop fun ways to encourage more children to use those routes, and recruit parents and neighbors to accompany children to school. A Walking School Bus is an activity where parent participation is highly encouraged.
Increase EPISD police presence before and after school to reduce traffic congestion in and around the school.
